Piriformis Syndrome

From Laura Inverarity, D.O., About.com GuideAugust 10, 2008

Follow me on:

Piriformis syndrome is a condition that results when the piriformis muscle compresses the sciatic nerve and irritates the nerve fibers. This results in pain that starts in the buttock region and radiates down the back of the leg. Symptoms are normally aggravated by sitting, climbing stairs, kneeling, walking, or running.

Thank you for this very useful information. I think that I have piriformis syndrome – when I press on a certain spot of my buttock I can sense that this is where the pain radiates from. I walk on the treadmill every day – walking seems to improve this condition but after sitting for a while the ache returns. I try to stay active but sometimes the ache gets to be very annoying and I have to lie down or sit. Do you have anything other than pills to relieve this condition? I’d appreciate hearing from you. Thanks, Bea
