Recovering After Hip Replacement
Thursday June 25, 2009
The rehabilitation process after total hip replacement occurs early in the post-operative period. Most patients start physical therapy the day after their surgery.

Dear Dr Laura and Readers, Nice post regarding THR exercises. This reply is on a proximal topic. I am in the early phases of formulating a research project on pelvic mechanics in clients who have completed total hip replacement rehabilitation. It is my observation that a fair number of this population still has gait abnormalities, especially regarding mechanics of the pelvis (not the hip, not the sacroiliac), specifically the entire pelvis. I frequently see folks in the public, such as shopping malls, etc who (appear to have had a hip replacement) and appear to still have a pattern which I name pelvic side-glide. Per the definition I use, one would have to test passive excursion of the pelvis to definitively say that they have that pattern. typically one side moves freely, the other side moves much less and has a hard end-feel to the motion. Treatment is very easy, very straight forward, and very brief. I suspect that evaluation and treatment of this pattern might not be part of their standardized care. Again I am in the formulative stages of this research and would benefit from contributors in the way of research design and interpretation, helping to carry out the research, funding, etc. Jerry Hesch, MHS, PT
