This week the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) will air a series of broadcasts on Move Forward Radio that focus on sports concussions. "Head in the Game" will feature interviews with various experts in concussion management, diagnosis, evaluation, and prevention.
The lineup for the series features Chris Miller, former NFL quarterback on August 27th at 10 am ET. Miller will discuss his personal experience with concussions and speak about how the NFL is making changes to protect players from concussions.
The August 28th webcast will air at 10 am ET and features Anne Mucha, PT, MS, NCS. Anne is a physical therapist at the Center for Rehabilitative Services at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. She will discuss ways that athletes are treated for concussions and ways to determine when and if someone is ready to return to competition after concussion.
The final broadcast will be a live discussion on Move Forward Radio at 3 pm ET and will feature Kevin Guskiewicz, Phd, ATC, FACSM and Mike Ryan, PT, ATC. Both are experts in the field of concussion evaluation and management. Listeners can access the show via the internet or by calling (646) 564-9841 and can submit questions ahead of time via Twitter to @MoveForwardPT and using the hashtag #MoveForward. Listeners can also ask questions via telephone during the live broadcast.
A concussion is a type of brain injury that occurs when the brain is shaken inside the skull. Proper managment of concussions usually involves a multi-disclipinary approach to care, and physical therapists help to provide an essential role in care with much focus on the balance and vestibular issues that may occur after a concussion.
