A lumbar strain is the result of a stretching injury to the muscles, tendons, or ligaments of the lower back. The over stretching component of this injury results in miro tears of the affected structures. These tears cause swelling and pain that can be felt at rest or with activity.

Treatment of lumbar strains involves rest, heat, pain medication, and stretching and strengthening of the low back muslces.
