Risk Factors for Fibromyalgia

Age: Younger people in their and middle adulthood tend to develop fibromyalgia more often than elderly people. However, this condition can also occur in children.
Sex: Women are more at risk for developing fibromyalgia than men.
Family History: If a parent, sibling, or other relative has fibromyalgia, one is more at risk for developing the condition.
Altered Sleep Patterns: People with insomnia or other sleeping disorders such as restless leg syndrome or sleep apnea are at higher risk of developing fibromyalgia.
Rheumatic Disease: People with rheumatic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, ankylosing spondylitis are more at risk of developing fibromyalgia.
