Overview:

Iliotibial band syndome is an overuse condition. It occurs when a tight iliotibial band rubs agains the lateral condyle of the knee bone. This causes friction which results in inflammation at the knee joint. The inflammation causes pain and discomfort during activity.

Iliotibial Band:

The iliotibial band is a thick tendon. This tendon is located on the lateral side of the thigh. It runs from the hip joint down to the knee joint.

Treatment:

Stretching the iliotibial band is a good way to prevent iliotibial band syndrome. If symptoms occur, rest from activity as well as applying ice to the lateral knee will help reduce symptoms.
