Post Surgical Pain and Swelling - Symptoms of CRPS

From Laura Inverarity, D.O., About.com GuideFebruary 5, 2009

Follow me on:

After breaking a bone or undergoing a surgical procedure, some people can experience a prolonged duration of pain. Pain that is stronger or lasts longer than one would normally expect. If this prolonged recovery period is also associated with swelling, temperature change, or color differences of the affected area, you may be developing complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS).

Diagnostic criteria for the diagnosis of CRPS include:
Continuing pain of the arm or leg disproportionate to the initiating event
Pain associated with changes in skin blood flow, swelling, or abnormal sweating
No evidence of another condition that could account for the pain or dysfunction
