I recently evaluated a patient who is a football player who suffered an ankle fracture and ankle dislocation. It was a pretty serious injury and he required surgery to reduce his fractured fibula. He walked with crutches and wore an immobilizer on his ankle for a couple months, and now he is referred to physical therapy to help improve his strength, range of motion, and mobility.
During the evaluation, we got talking about his injury and how it was pretty ugly looking. A dislocated ankle is not a pretty site. It is definitely something that could make you cringe a bit. My patient offerred to show me a picture of his ankle. Apparently, this guy had the presence of mind to snap a few shots of his mangled foot and ankle while sitting in the emergency room waiting to be patched up.
He showed me the picture, and I must say, it made me shudder. It is just pretty unnatural for an ankle to be in that freakish position. I asked that he send me the picture so I could share it with you. He agreed. Enjoy!
