Overview:

Bursitis is inflammation of the fluid filled sacs, bursa, that cushion areas of pressure between joints, muscles, and tendons. Bursitis is due to overuse or repetative actions around the joints of the body. This inflammation results in pain that is experienced during movement or pressure.

Common Sites:

Bursitis most commonly occurs around the shoulder, elbow, and hip joints.

Symptoms:

Symptoms of bursitis include:

Pain with movement or pressure
Swelling of the joint region
Joint aching or stiffness

Treatment:

Management of bursitis involves several treatment combinations. Rest and immobilization of the affected area is important in the early stages of treatment. Applying ice to the inflammed bursa is also important. Non steroidal anti-inflammatory medications can also assist in decreasing pain and swelling. Gentle stretching and physical therapy can help bursitis from reoccuring.
