Evaluation and Diagnosis

Children are often screened for scoliosis during school screening sessions or at family physician offices. Physical examination is the most common way to screen for scoliosis. During this examination, the spine is evaluated from the back. The spine is assessed in the standing and bending positions. The evaluator is looking for any lateral curvature in the spine in these two positions.
X-rays are used to confirm any scoliosis picked up during physical examination. Evaluation of scoliosis curvatures on x-ray will assist the physician in making treatment decisions based on the degree of spinal curvature.
